The goal of biblical counseling is to untie knots in the soul. Prevailing themes arise in people who are untangling from the harshness of life, one of which is simply redefining the boundaries of the word “normal.” The commonness of the word is part and parcel to the difficulty of defining it because every person defines it according to their experience. One friend described this advent as “learning to live a new normal.” What has been “normal” often for a lifetime is now labeled with words that more accurately describe the many painful realities that life begets. The new normal moves beyond the wounds and determines to re-set life through a lens of courage and faith instead of fear and failure.
When Jesus came and preached His message of the Kingdom, He was declaring that a “new normal” had come. When He declared, “The Kingdom of God is at hand” His words tore through centuries of bondage, abuse and lies that the former dictator of the world has knotted into the soul of every man. Even God’s remnant had lived under a law that only staid the tide of death inaugurated through the Garden collaboration between man and satan. The world was decayed, putrefied with sin and ruled by a despot and that was the “normal” for mankind since he had never known anything different. When you don’t know anything different, human nature fights to keep things the same.
This is the case with many in the church today. Saved and free from guilt, they unwittingly keep as much of the “normal” past as possible while still staying committed. They keep the same models of fear, anger and condemnation in place. They continue to mistrust even the safest relationships and perpetuate the same patterns on their children, barely going a step beyond the painful dysfunction of their own lives. All of this in the context of the church because, after all, it doesn’t take long to figure out how to “do church” in such a way that it fools the person on the right and on the left every Sunday morning.
It’s tragic, isn’t it? Jesus paid the price of Kingdom living for all who would “come unto Me.” Yet the prevalence of non-kingdom living permeates the church everyday. Makes you think about the threat to “cast you out where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” The description accurately describes the way many professed believers live today.
It is a Kingdom issue, friend. It is the willing submission to do what God’s word says and to change what others who truly love us observe. Created for intimacy with both God and man, I need those who can lead me when I am blind to my old “normal” way of looking at things. The new normal of the Kingdom declares that I am free, that the joy of knowing God surpasses all other joy, that I can be generous without fear as well as being humble without regret. I can give up because it is the path to great gain. I can have peace in the midst of war. I can have abundant and overflowing life when I die to myself. I can hear God speak and ask Him for my every need. It is an amazing way to live… So why don’t more enjoy the freedom of Kingdom living?
For every person in the gospels that came to Jesus and said, “I will follow you,” the response was the same. Give up your life. Give Me your all. Give others your service and devotion. Like a knot that keeps the rope from slipping seamlessly to its goal, like a tangle that catches the comb in my granddaughter’s hair, the new normal of the Kingdom must get beyond my old way of thinking and doing. Make no mistake about it. This is as much as a daily discipline as a matter of heavenly gift. The attempt to change according to Romans 12:2 requires a determination to not be what I have been so that I can become what He has called.
I am back in India as I write. Last night I heard how my friend spoke a dream in 1988 to the 50 or so staff and students of India Bible College. He envisioned an English speaking graduate Seminary, a greatly expanded campus, thousands of church planters and multiple bible colleges throughout India to educate them. Many in the meeting scoffed at the dreams of a young man who didn’t really understand the way things were.
But the knots were taken out. The tangles of tradition were removed, people were healed, thinking began to change and today I prepare to teach on two campuses comprised of over 300 students and well over 100 staff and professors. What happened? The Kingdom, friend… the Kingdom of God was embraced beyond the old and staid ways of the past.
And if God can do that in India, He can certainly affect you and your life if you submit to His word and to those with whom you have been called to walk. He has called you to live a new normal, the new normal life of the citizen of the Kingdom of God.
