“That’s my place, Peter. Don’t you dare sit there.” John seldom spoke to his friend with such stern seriousness.
All of the other disciples were rushing to the best places at the dinner table too. It was Passover, the most important meal of the year. The 12 Apostles were dining with Jesus in the upper room of a friend’s home. But instead of acting like adults, they were pushing and shoving to get the best places at the table. They were acting like a bunch of schoolboys instead of the future leaders of the church!
Jesus, you see, would certainly be seated at the head of the table. Those to His left and right would be considered next in importance to Him. So every one of the disciples was fussing and arguing about which of them should sit next to Jesus. The room grew louder and the arguing more intense, so intense that no one noticed when Jesus entered the room. In the glow of the oil lamps. He simply stood there taking in the scene of grown men acting like little boys. By the look on His face you could tell that this was not the first time they had argued about who was the greatest!
“Excuse Me, but where do I sit?” The disciples froze when they heard Jesus’ voice. Now scurrying to make room at the table for Him, their loud arguing became silent shoving as they seated themselves around the low table. Everyone wanted to sit next to Him, but for all the wrong reasons. They just wanted to feel more important than the others.
Jesus began to speak. “It is so good to be here with you all! We just haven’t had enough of these times together lately, have we?”
Everyone nodded their agreement, thankful that they had been invited to share Passover with Jesus. My, weren’t they important?
They felt more important than His other friends, that’s for sure!
“So tell Me, men. Just what were you discussing so angrily when I first came into the room? It must have been something of great significance.” The room fell silent. Every man knew that Jesus had overheard their prideful talk. But no one said a word. All were too embarrassed to even try to explain their selfish pushing and shoving.
“Men, let Me tell you something. A bully always tries to prove that he is more important than anyone else. He is always concerned about who is bigger, better, or stronger. But it’s not going to be that way among you, not if you are determined to be like Me. I have come as a servant, not as a master. My kind of leadership is the kind that leads by serving.”
The disciples had never heard Jesus describe Himself that way. But as they thought about it, that was exactly what He had always done. He was always giving to people and never expected anything in return.
They were humbled by His words. Every eye was cast downward as they considered how selfish and rude they had been to one another. All the talk about who was best seemed so silly now!
Jesus got up from the table. Hanging by the door was the apron worn by the servant who cleaned the feet of the house guests as they arrived. Wrapping the apron around His waist, He picked up the pitcher of water and knelt at the dirty feet of one of the disciples. Not a sound could be heard except the cool water splashing over dirty feet. One by one, the Servant Master washed the feet of the now humbled apostle. One by one their hearts broke as they realized the pride that kept them from serving one another. The most important person in the room was now serving them.
The act of kindness completed, Jesus sat again at the table. “Do you know what I have done for you? I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done. Do this for one another and you shall be blessed! Now, let’s have something to eat.”
The apostles passed the food around the table, amazed and humbled at what had taken place. This night would be one they would never forget. In the midst of their selfish behavior and harsh words, Jesus had shown them a better way to live. He was certainly the greatest servant of all!
