It was just another day. The dusty road that led from the village to Jacob’s Well was so familiar she could almost walk the distance without opening her eyes. Now too old to bear children at all, she had taken up with a man in the village, even though they were not married. The whole village rejected her. They called her awful names and looked the other way when they saw her on the street. But she didn’t care anymore. She was just trying to survive.
Coming to the well every day was one of the few things that she really enjoyed. She would daydream about how she and her sisters would race to this spot as children. She would think of her mother, now dead and gone, who would tell stories to her as they walked along. But that was many years ago. Alone now, she would draw her water from the deep well, place the clay pitcher on her head, and walk slowly home. Today was no different, just another long and lonely day.
But what’s this? There is a man at the well today. And He is not dressed like the other men of the village. In fact, He is dressed like a Jew. What could He possibly be doing at the well?
Jews, you see, had nothing to do with Samaritans. Centuries before, there had been an argument between neighbors. Now the two groups would not even talk to one another. So keeping her eyes cast downward, Joanna approached the well. She was determined to get her water and go home. The Jew would hear nothing from her, nothing at all. That was for sure!
“Give Me a drink of water.” Her ears flushed red with the words she heard. How dare He speak to her!
“Excuse Me, Madam. Would you please give Me a drink of water?”
Joanna never looked up. Hurrying to pull the bucket from the well, she threw her words at the stranger like a fiery arrow. “How come You, a Jew, are asking me for a drink? What do You really want?”
She expected a good cursing. But the stranger spoke with the soft and gentle voice of a shepherd herding his sheep.
“Woman, if you knew the kindness of God and who I am, you would be asking me for a drink. I would give you fresh, living water. Everyone who drinks of Jacob’s Well will get thirsty again and again. Anyone who drinks the water that I give will never thirst. The water I give will be a free-flowing spring that gushes with abundant life.”
An ordinary day had just turned into an encounter with God. The simple task of drawing water from the well had turned into a marvelous discovery of a life giving spring!
