“Take no thought about tomorrow…”
Conventional wisdom says that tomorrow is “a better day.”
- “There is always tomorrow.”
- “Tomorrow is another day.”
- “Look to tomorrow.”
Tomorrow is portrayed as always having a cool breeze and a smile to boot. Unless you live in the real world, that is. In the real world, the troubles of today are compounded by the thought of tomorrow. And I don’t know about you, but that is where I pitch my tent sometimes.
The Bible’s prescription for worry is simple. Worry could be defined as fear of the future. In other words, worry is living in the unknown of what we think tomorrow will bring. When life is stressful, others try to encourage us to “look to the future” but, for some, looking to the future torments us with fear because the future is always an unknown. That is why Jesus said, “Don’t worry. Don’t live in fear of tomorrow.”
He instructs us to live in the struggles of Now and not to get caught up in yesterday’s hurts…which produces anger. Not to dwell on what could be tomorrow…which produces fear.
Live fully in today. That is where Jesus promises to walk with us and where He promises to meet our needs. So don’t look to tomorrow or you will be looking in the wrong place for Sabbath. Instead, commit the struggles of today to your yoke-mate, Jesus.
Tomorrow, after all, is an excessively heavy burden to bear.
Especially when it is still today.
