Charging into the home of his lifelong friend, Joel barely slowed his pace enough to talk. “Quick, Samuel. Jesse needs us!” The panic in Joel’s voice was enough for Samuel to act quickly. No need to ask what the problem was. Joel’s concern was enough to act on.
Jesse was their lifelong friend. When they were young boys; the three had disobeyed their parents and climbed a big hill outside of their village. Tragically, Jesse had fallen onto the rocks below. He never walked again. The pain and guilt that the other boys felt welded their bond of friendship throughout their lives. When Jesse needed something, anything, he knew that he could count on Samuel and Joel. But what could cause such a panic on this hot afternoon in the sleepy town of Capernaum?
Now twenty years later, the two men rounded the corner and saw their pitiful looking friend. Each day, his family would place him on the busiest street in the village to beg for money from those who passed by. His little clay dish collected the few coins that the wealthy would toss in. He looked so wretched lying there on the street. The pang of guilt and sorrow struck the two men each time they saw their friend.
“Please help a poor cripple, sir! Please have mercy on a wretched sinner! Alms, alms for the poor!” Jesse’s voice could barely be heard above the noise of the marketplace. And people were so used to seeing him, hardly anyone bothered to throw coins in his dish any longer. He often wished he could just die and be done with life. Surely God must hate him, he thought. Why else would God leave him to suffer so?
The comfort of his dear friends’ voices caused a smile to break out on his face. For the first time, Joel told the whole story behind his excitement. “Jesse! We have to take you to see a man who heals people! I saw Him with my very own eyes. Jesus heals the blind and the lame. I know if we can just get close to Him He will heal you too!”
With that, the two friends picked up the stretcher and ran to the house where Jesus was staying. But the house was so crowded! There was no getting close to the doorway to see Jesus. Samuel had an idea. “Quick! Get up on the roof!” By now, two other friends were helping lift the crippled man onto the roof of the house. Samuel was up on top, pulling at the big clay tiles and digging through the hard mud and straw that lay beneath the heavy shingle.
Down below, no one knew what the commotion was all about. Suddenly the bright sunlight broke through, along with a shower of dirt and straw. And it fell right on top of Jesus! Looking up, the Lord could see the four men lowering Jesse right through the roof.
Jesus was very impressed! Never before had He seen this kind of love-a love that would do anything to help a friend. It didn’t matter what others thought, Samuel and Joel knew that their friend needed to be healed by Jesus and they would do anything to help.
As Jesse lay on the floor, Jesus looked first at him and then at the four friends looking down from the gaping hole in the roof. He knew that the men had served their friend well. They had humbled themselves in front of the whole village in order to get help from Jesus.
“Son,” said Jesus, “your sins are forgiven.” Jesse felt a warmth go throughout his body. A feeling that he had not felt since the fall. Then Jesus looked about the room at the shocked look of the people and bent down close to the crippled man. “Rise and walk! Take up your bed and go home!” And Jesse did!
There was rejoicing in Jesse’s home that night. All of his friends came to see the great work of God. But the greatest work was done in the hearts of Jesse and his friends. They learned that God will do great things for those of a humble heart.
