No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; He’ll never let you be pushed past your limit; He’ll always be there to help you come through it.

For the past 16 years, Jan and I have faced a trial that has at times been both unrelenting and seemingly insurmountable. The blood cancer (polycythemia vera) that she has lived with has been furthered by two other chronic “cousins” pushing her body to the limit. Many of you have walked with us through this and for that we are so grateful. This letter is to inform you of some major changes that we are facing in the near future.
Over this past year, Jan’s overall well-being began to noticeably decline alerting us to the potential of the progression of the disease. As a result of careful consultation with her hematologist/oncologist, we began to research the potential of a stem-cell transplant for Jan. As of last Friday, we have now begun the preparation for the procedure that will take place within the next 4 to 8 weeks.
The stem-cell transplant is one of the modern medical “miracles” of the 21st century. Her sister was tested many years ago and she proved to be a good match at the time. Sue’s stem cells will be harvested if all tests are positive and then given to Jan after a brutal regiment of chemotherapy and radiation. The in-hospital stay will be one month and the out-patient care will be another 100 days. For those four months, Jan will need a 24/7 caregiver which is required by M.D. Anderson for the procedure. For the first month, I will be with her and a care team from our church will help with the follow-up care.
This is not a full-proof “cure” by any means. Just today, we discussed with Jan’s trusted doctor the risks and new difficulties that can arise as a result of the procedure. There are a host of complications along with other chronic health issues that can arise as a result of the transplant. At this point, we will continue to seek others advice along with asking the Lord for His continual confirmation through the process.
Beyond those sobering facts are the decisions to be made in the coming weeks. One of the biggest changes that the procedure will insist on us is that Jan and I will need to re-locate to Houston during the 4 month process. The church will be in the capable hands of my oldest son, James, along with Joseph, the staff, elders and home ministers. It will be an interesting “proving ground” of what Jan and I have preached and lived over our 20 years of tenure here in New Braunfels.
I wanted to write to you and ask you to watch over us in prayer through these months. Even now as I write, it is hard to get my heart and mind wrapped around the unfolding of these events that are sure to be life altering.
There have been many times through the years when we wondered “how much longer?” We have always had great faith in God… but “great faith” is often misrepresented as a doctrine of denial that is a breeding ground for all sorts of difficult times. Great faith for us has been the product of the trial in which we have walked. It is the kind of faith in our God who truly loves us and who’s plan is always for blessing… either here on the earth or with Him in Eternity. Now, we are trying to wrap our minds around the END of this trial. A new day is dawning and though the darkness will at first increase, joy will come in this new morning.
This is all with great risk, by the way. For every ten transplant recipients, two die. That is the simple sobering facts of which we are well aware. But my dear friend and father in the Lord, Jim Darnell, has consistently prayed over the years that Jan would, “see her children’s, children’s, children!” That targeted prayer has been a wonderful staff I have leaned on as we have climbed this rocky path. Now, we can seen the top of the mountain, feel the cool breeze of the plateau, and hear the cold and clear stream where we will rest.

We know that the battle is not yet won and we cannot possibly go through these months on our own strength. That is why I am writing to you today, Jan and I need you to pray! Through these coming months, I’ll be giving reports and specific prayer targets through my personal website along with emails. Already, my friends in India are praying. Across the United States, individuals have been praying for Jan for years. Friends in China, Guatemala, Africa, and Southeast Asia are praying.
