Gold. The image of worth and the standard of excellence. Yet in the darkness of night, when the storm clouds shutter away even a hint of reflection, gold seems too much to dream for let alone ask and expect. But it is gold and nothing less that God determines to produce in me. The Master Goldsmith patiently waits – and, for me, waits and waits – as my life melts in the crucible. It is there that heat, white hot and holy, is applied. And the patience of God becomes my enemy.
Enemy, you say?
Yes. I hate the fact that my hopes, my dreams, my life must once again be melted down. He will not overlook the bit of dross here or there in my life. I love contentment, He does not. And my contentment becomes the “good enough” – the silver! – that I will too gladly settle for.
So He leans over His crucible as my life puddles in the extreme heat of His holy call. There He waits until the dross begins to rise. He knows the imperfections are there and the hearts knows its own dross. He will only settle for pure gold.
Job experienced all of this. His life seemed ordered enough. He was blessed of God and a very religious man. Others looked to him and modeled his life in order to gain God’s blessing. But God melted him down and the pages of his story read like a dross-filled crucible. In the midst of the blast of holy fire, Job says this:
But He knows the way that I take, When He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold. My foot has held fast to His steps; I have kept His way and not turned aside. I have not departed from the commandments of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.
God was interested in nothing less than gold. The storm clouds that swirled around Job in demonic hatefulness would be the very crucible that would produce pure gold.
Amy Carmichael, Irish missionary to India, know full well the lessons of the crucible. At one point, she sought out the village goldsmith and asked him, “How do you know how long to sit and wait? How do you know when the gold is purified?”
Looking down into the crucible, the goldsmith replied, “When I can see my face in it.”
